Kulhanbeyi opened on the first of the year as a small 25 seat cocktail bar tucked away in the basement of a restaurant in the historic neighborhood of Pera, Istanbul. The space that the bar occupies was once the coal room that powered the first ever metro in Istanbul. Since Kulhanbeyi in Turkish means the man who tends the coal room that heats the Turkish Baths, it seemed fitting for a bar meant to reflect the city’s rich history. All of the decor, glassware, and furniture was sourced over several months from Istanbul’s small antique stores and flea markets to give an authentic representation of what Istanbul had been like when Europeans traveled by train to visit ‘Constantinople' and see this amazing city. Kulhanbeyi is meant to be a place to escape, to enjoy a nice cocktail, and to give new meaning to the term Turkish Hospitality.
