Rumeli Cafe & Restaurant • Sultanahmet

Hikayemiz

Nestled in the tourism precinct of Sultanahmet, Rumeli Cafe is an ideal location for dining while people watching the nations of the world from the restaurant’s streetside terrace. Summertime sees the opening of the rooftop dining area, where guests can gaze at the stars and glimpse at the minarets of the Blue Mosque. When the weather chills in winter, the allure of the restaurant moves inside—where the gentle crackling of open fireplaces invite guests to stay a while to appreciate a glass of mulled wine paired with a rich Ottoman dish.

Set in a former Ottoman print house, the restaurant has become one of Sultanahmet’s most loved restaurants since the building’s renovation in 1994. Now it’s famous for its friendly service and intimate dining areas with dark wood floors, wrought iron fixtures, and exposed red brick walls—an atmosphere reminiscent of dining in a foregone Byzantine palace.

The Rumeli Café is located nicely in a small side street near the Blue Mosque. You can sit outside in a neatly illuminated environment or inside, very cosy with a fireplace on each floor. The food we had was definitely remarkably better than the standard we experienced so far in Istanbul. This is not just another Köfte and kebab site, all the Turkish meals here are prepared and minced in a very special way - my wife and I were positive that this was the best food we had in a week of Istanbul. The staff was polite, quick, friendly and attentive, also above standard. On the downside, there are only two things that come to mind: First, you should bring some time - it took over 20 minutes to get the starters, and after we were finished with those, another 30 minutes for the main dishes. It was worth the wait, no doubt, and the nice atmosphere made time pass by quickly, but if you are in a hurry, this does not seem to be the first choice. Secondly, the prices are not actually what you'd call a bargain. I'm not talking about the food here - yes, you pay more here than in other places in Istanbul, but that's fully justified by the superior quality. However, the prices for drinks were rather steep. 7 to 9 Lira for a beer is pretty much even by Western Europe standards, let alone what you're used to pay elsewhere in Istanbul.
